Making A Move Easier When You Have Young Children

Are you the parent of a young child? Are you getting ready to move to a new home? Moving can be a complicated and hectic time for anyone, but may seem almost impossible if you have small children. Here are some ways to make the process easier on everyone:

Hire a moving company: If you try to do the move yourself, you may end up with your child "helpfully" trying to pack the family pet or his or her breakfast. He or she may also try to unpack everything, even while you're still in the middle of packing everything up. If your child isn't quite old enough to understand what's going on, he or she may be under the impression that the process of putting things into or taking things out of boxes is some sort of game. But when you hire a moving company that offers packing services, you won't have to keep one eye on your child while trying to sort your belongings into boxes.

Get your child out of the house: If you're married, have your spouse take your child to somewhere like the mall or the zoo before the moving company arrives. If that's not possible, ask a friend or relative if they can babysit your child for a few hours while the movers pack up your belongings. It can be extremely distressing for a young child to see strangers in his or her home "invaded" by strangers and for everything in your home to disappear into the back of a moving van. Getting your child out of the way for a few hours will allow the movers to do their job more quickly than if there was an upset preschooler in your home.

Pack an overnight bag: Even if you are moving within the same city and are taking advantage of packing services offered by your moving company, it's a good idea to pack an overnight bag of favorites for your child. Inside the bag should be a small selection of his or her favorite toys and books. Although you might be planning to be at least partially unpacked on the same day, there could be delays. The moving van could get a flat tire and arrive much later than expected or one of your family members could fall ill on moving day. Having a bag of favorites available at the new house will help to reassure your child that his or her belongings aren't lost forever.
